World Environment Day: CM Majhi calls for mass movement to protect nature and combat climate change
Bhubaneswar, June 5: On the occasion of World Environment Day, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi extended his greetings to the people of the state and appealed for collective action to safeguard the environment and address the growing challenges of climate change.
In his message, the Chief Minister highlighted this year’s theme, “Inspired By Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” and stressed that environmental protection is not limited to conservation alone but is closely linked to climate action, economic development, social security, and the well-being of future generations.
Majhi said Odisha is blessed with abundant natural resources, rich biodiversity, and a strong tradition of environmental stewardship. He emphasized that sustainable development can only be achieved through the protection, conservation, and scientific management of these valuable resources.
The Chief Minister noted that issues such as climate change, water scarcity, and challenges in the agricultural sector have emerged as major global concerns, affecting livelihoods, public health, natural resources, and social systems across the world.
Referring to this year’s campaign, #NowForClimate, he urged citizens to embrace climate-friendly lifestyles, support green economic initiatives, and reduce their carbon footprint through responsible consumption and sustainable practices.
Reaffirming the state government's commitment to green development, Majhi said Odisha is actively promoting renewable energy, climate-resilient infrastructure, environmental conservation, and community participation to build a healthier and more prosperous future.
He called upon people from all walks of life to take a pledge to participate in tree plantation drives, eliminate single-use plastics, conserve water, and protect forests and wildlife. “Let us transform environmental protection into a people's movement and build a green, prosperous, climate-resilient, and pollution-free Odisha,” he said, concluding with the message: “Green Odisha, Prosperous Odisha – Foundation for Sustainable Development.”
