Four Odisha workers stranded in Thailand seek government help to return home

Bhubaneswar, June 4: Four migrant workers from Odisha’s Kendrapara district have made a desperate appeal to the Central and State governments for assistance, claiming they are stranded in Thailand under distressing conditions after being denied wages for several months.

The workers — Khirod Das of Gobang village, Manoj Mallick of Poijharia, Kailash Sethy of Nahuni, and Nityananda Mallick of Padanipal — along with a labourer from Uttar Pradesh, have released an emotional video narrating their plight and seeking immediate intervention for their safe return to India.

According to the workers, they have been employed at a plywood manufacturing company in Thailand’s Kabin Buri district for more than a year. They alleged that the company owner took them to Thailand on tourist visas and initially paid them regularly for the first nine months. However, they claim they have not received any salary for the last four months, leaving them in severe financial hardship.

The labourers said they are struggling to survive, often remaining hungry and managing with just one meal a day. They further alleged that Kailash Sethy has fallen seriously ill and is suffering from swelling in his hands and legs, but the employer has refused to provide medical treatment or assistance.

The workers also claimed that their passports and visas have expired and that they are being threatened by the company owner. According to them, the employer has warned of handing them over to the police if they refuse to work and has allegedly threatened them with dire consequences.

With no money, valid travel documents, or support system, the stranded workers have urged both the Odisha and Central governments to intervene immediately and facilitate their rescue and return to India.
