Man allegedly kills elderly mother over money for liquor in Kendrapara
Bhubaneswar, May 25: In a shocking incident that has left residents stunned, a 39-year-old man allegedly beat his 75-year-old mother to death after she refused to give him money to buy liquor at Patuli village under Rajkanika block in Kendrapara district.
The deceased was identified as Haramani Sahu, while the accused is her son Bijay Sahu. The incident reportedly took place late on Saturday night.
According to police sources, Bijay, an unmarried man and habitual drunkard, frequently demanded money from his parents to purchase alcohol and often created disturbances in the house after consuming liquor. On the night of the incident, he allegedly returned home in an intoxicated state and demanded money from his mother while the family was resting after dinner.
When Haramani and her husband Nabaghan Sahu refused to give him money, an argument reportedly broke out. Police said Bijay became violent and allegedly attacked his mother with a wooden stick. Despite efforts by his father, a retired CRPF jawan, to stop him, the accused allegedly continued the assault, leaving Haramani critically injured. She died on the spot due to severe injuries.
Following the incident, Nabaghan Sahu lodged a complaint at Rajkanika Police Station, after which police arrested the accused.
Police have recovered the body for postmortem examination and registered a murder case. Further investigation is underway.
