Bhubaneswar, May 19: A shocking incident of public violence came to light in Berhampur on Monday evening after a young couple was allegedly assaulted with bamboo sticks in broad daylight on Giri Road, triggering widespread outrage after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

The disturbing footage shows two youths repeatedly attacking the couple in the middle of the road while several passers-by watched the incident unfold. Though a few people attempted to intervene and stop the assault, many bystanders remained silent spectators, raising serious concerns over public safety and apathy in crowded urban areas.

According to preliminary reports, the attack is suspected to have originated from previous enmity between the parties involved. However, police are yet to confirm the exact reason behind the brutal assault.

Following the incident, the injured couple was immediately shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Doctors attending to them stated that both victims are currently in stable condition.

Baidyanathpur Police registered a case soon after the incident and launched an investigation. Police officials are examining the viral video footage, recording statements of eyewitnesses and collecting evidence to identify and arrest the attackers.

The incident has sparked strong reactions among local residents, who have demanded stricter policing and enhanced patrolling on busy roads in Berhampur to prevent such incidents in future.
