VIMSAR PG student attempts suicide amid alleged stress and harassment, under ICU care
Bhubaneswar, Mar 30: A postgraduate student of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Sambalpur allegedly attempted suicide and is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), raising concerns over mental health and working conditions in medical institutions.
The student, a first-year PG scholar in the Department of Pediatrics, reportedly consumed sleeping pills. Preliminary reports suggest that she had been under severe mental stress due to an excessive workload, including emergency duties and academic responsibilities.
Sources further indicated that allegations of mental harassment by the department head may have contributed to her distress, though the exact circumstances are yet to be officially confirmed. The incident has sparked concern among fellow students and the medical community regarding workplace pressure and support systems.
VIMSAR Superintendent and Director, Dr Lal Mohan Nayak, stated that a detailed inquiry will be conducted once the student’s condition stabilizes. He assured that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
It is also learnt that the student’s spouse is a doctor pursuing postgraduate studies in neurosurgery at SCB Medical College and Hospital.
