Top Maoist leader Sukru surrenders in Odisha, major blow to insurgency
Bhubaneswar, Mar 24: In a significant development for Odisha’s anti-Naxal campaign, wanted Maoist leader Sukru alias Kosha Sodhi, who carried a bounty of Rs 55 lakh, has surrendered before Kandhamal police along with four associates and an AK-47 rifle. The surrender marks a major success for ongoing security operations in the region.
ADG (Anti-Naxal Operations) Sanjeeb Panda confirmed that all five Maoists are currently in police custody. Officials stated that the formal surrender will be publicly announced at a special event scheduled for tomorrow.
Sukru, aged 49 and a native of Malkangiri district, was a state committee member of the banned CPI (Maoist) and considered the most senior active Maoist in Odisha. He reportedly led a group of around 13 rebels, mainly from Chhattisgarh, operating in Kandhamal district.
Police sources revealed that Sukru had been obstructing surrender efforts. Earlier this year, he allegedly killed his subordinate Anwesh for attempting to surrender. Continuous pressure from intensified police operations, drone surveillance, and appeals from family members are believed to have forced Sukru to lay down arms.
Officials hope this surrender will accelerate Odisha’s mission to become Maoist-free soon.
