Odisha Vigilance seizes cash and foreign currency from arrested ASI in bribery case
Bhubaneswar, Mar 13: Odisha Vigilance officials on Friday recovered Rs 3.31 lakh in cash along with foreign currency notes from Vietnam and Nepal from the possession of Arupa Nanda Das, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Badagaon Police Station in Sundargarh district. Das had been arrested a day earlier in connection with a bribery case.
According to officials, the recovery was made during searches carried out at several locations linked to the accused officer. Vigilance teams conducted raids at his government quarters in Bhubaneswar as well as at his residence in Badagaon. During the search operations, the officials seized Rs 3.31 lakh in Indian currency along with foreign currency notes belonging to Vietnam and Nepal.
As per an official press release, Das had allegedly demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a local dhaba owner. In return, he reportedly promised to help the businessman in a police case and ensure that his eatery could continue operating without any interference.
Investigators also revealed that Das had travelled to Vietnam in May last year and had retained some foreign currency from that trip, in addition to currency notes from Nepal.
Following the developments, Odisha Vigilance registered a case at Rourkela Vigilance Police Station under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. The accused ASI was produced before a court on Friday for further legal proceedings.
