Man opens fire in Kandhamal: Wife killed, another man critically injured

Bhubaneswar, Mar 10: A shocking incident of gun violence has been reported from Odisha’s Kandhamal district, where a man allegedly went on a shooting spree, killing his wife and critically injuring another person. The accused has been detained by police, who have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack.

The accused has been identified as Biranchi Behera, a resident of Sarupada village under Krandibali panchayat. According to reports, the incident unfolded when Narottam Behera of Katapanga village was travelling with his wife to Phiringia to get an Aadhaar card made.

Near the Bagharimunda kendu leaf collection point under Gochhapada police limits, Biranchi allegedly intercepted the couple and opened fire. Narottam was hit by bullets in the leg and other parts of the body, leaving him seriously injured.

After the attack, Biranchi reportedly returned home and allegedly shot his wife, Lilima Behera, killing her on the spot. The reason behind the murder is still unknown.

Police rushed to the spot after receiving information and shifted the injured Narottam to Gochhapada Community Health Centre. He was later referred to Phulbani District Headquarters Hospital for advanced treatment.

Police have seized the firearm used in the crime and detained Biranchi Behera for interrogation, said Gochhapada IIC Sanjit Behera. Investigations are underway to uncover the circumstances behind the violent incident.
