Consumer Commission orders electronics firm to pay Rs 91,000 after delivering marble instead of laptop
Bhubaneswar, Feb 10: In a significant consumer rights ruling, the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission in Sambalpur on Tuesday directed a leading electronics company to pay Rs 91,000 to a customer after a laptop he ordered was fraudulently replaced with a marble stone.
Dr. Choubarga Naik of Jhankarpali village under Jujomura block had purchased a laptop worth Rs 61,000 from the company. The product was delivered as an ‘open box’ package. While unboxing the parcel, Dr. Naik recorded the process on video and was shocked to find a marble stone inside instead of the laptop.
He immediately lodged complaints with the company and pursued repeated follow-ups seeking a refund or replacement. However, the firm allegedly failed to respond or resolve the grievance, prompting him to approach the Consumer Commission.
After reviewing evidence, including the unboxing video, the commission ruled in Dr. Naik’s favor. It ordered the company to refund Rs 61,000, pay Rs 25,000 as compensation for mental harassment, and Rs 5,000 towards litigation expenses.
The commission warned that non-compliance within 30 days would attract 9% compound interest on the total amount.
