Truck plunges into Sankh River in Sundargarh, helper killed, driver critical
Bhubaneswar, Feb 2: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a truck helper and left the driver critically injured after a 16-wheeler truck fell off the Jamunanaki bridge into the Sankh River late Sunday night. The incident occurred within the limits of the Brahmani Taranga police station area in Sundargarh district.
According to preliminary reports, the truck was travelling across the bridge when it allegedly lost control after hitting the divider. The heavy vehicle, which was not carrying any cargo at the time, veered off the bridge and plunged into the river below. The impact proved fatal for the helper, who died on the spot, while the driver sustained serious injuries.
Local residents alerted the police, following which a team rushed to the accident site and initiated rescue and investigation efforts. The injured driver was immediately shifted to Rourkela Government Hospital, where his condition is stated to be critical.
On Monday morning, the damaged truck was pulled out of the Sankh River with the help of heavy machinery. Police officials said the exact cause of the accident is being examined. The driver’s statement will be recorded once his health condition improves. Police are also probing whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the mishap. Further investigation is underway to ascertain all circumstances leading to the accident.
