Odisha Government hikes monthly allowance of grama rakhis to ₹2,500
Bhubaneswar, Jan 22: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced a significant increase in the monthly allowance of grama rakhis (village watchmen) serving in rural parts of the state, recognising their crucial role in maintaining grassroots law and order and supporting the police administration.
As per the revised decision, the monthly allowance of village guards has been enhanced from ₹1,800 to ₹2,500, offering much-needed financial relief to these frontline rural security personnel. The Chief Minister said the move reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening village-level policing and improving the working conditions of personnel who play a key role in ensuring public safety in remote areas.
Along with the allowance hike, the state government has introduced a new attendance and monitoring mechanism. Under the revised system, grama rakhis will be required to visit the police station under whose jurisdiction they are posted at least once every week to mark their attendance. This step aims to improve coordination between village watchmen and the local police, while also ensuring greater accountability and regular communication.
Grama rakhis act as the first line of defence in rural Odisha, assisting police in crime prevention, intelligence gathering, identification of suspects and maintaining peace at the village level. Officials believe the revised measures will boost morale, improve efficiency and further strengthen rural policing across the state.
