Sundargarh returns to normalcy after violent clash, internet services suspended
Bhubaneswar, Jan 16: Sundargarh town in Odisha is gradually returning to normalcy following a violent clash between two groups in the Regent Market area over a rumour related to beef possession. The incident left at least 12 people injured, including four police personnel, and triggered tension across the town.
As a precautionary measure, the district administration ordered the closure of educational institutions on Saturday and suspended internet services for 24 hours to prevent the spread of rumours and avoid further escalation. Despite the restrictions, vehicular movement remained largely normal, with several buses continuing to operate on city roads.
Senior police officials, including Western Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Brijesh Kumar Rai and Sundargarh Superintendent of Police AmritPal Kaur, visited the area and reviewed the security situation. They appealed to the public to maintain peace and cooperate with authorities to help restore normalcy. Heavy police deployment has been ensured at major squares and sensitive locations to prevent any untoward incidents.
According to sources, the violence erupted after a minor quarrel, which quickly escalated into a full-blown clash. Members of both groups allegedly resorted to stone-pelting, while some were reportedly seen wielding swords, creating panic among residents and shopkeepers in the area.
