Bhubaneswar records 74-year-old January low as cold wave grips capital
Bhubaneswar, Jan 8: The capital city of Odisha, Bhubaneswar, woke up to an unusually chilly morning on Thursday, with the temperature dipping to 9.4°C, equalling the lowest temperature recorded on January 8, 1952, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This makes it the fourth lowest minimum temperature recorded in the city during the month of January since 1952, reflecting the intensity of the prevailing cold wave.
IMD data shows that Bhubaneswar’s lowest January temperature was 8.6°C, recorded on January 5, 1992, followed by 9°C on January 17, 2003. On January 15, 2012, the mercury settled at 9.3°C. Notably, Thursday’s temperature of 9.4°C matches the historic low recorded on January 3, 1952.
Meteorologists attributed the sharp fall in temperature to cold winds blowing from a depression over the Bay of Bengal. However, IMD officials said no major weather changes are expected over the next 2–3 days.
Temperatures are likely to rise slightly by 2–3°C in the next two days, followed by a gradual cooling trend. Although the Bay of Bengal depression may intensify into a deep depression by Friday, it is unlikely to trigger rainfall in Odisha.
