Bhubaneswar, Dec 16: Notorious criminal Kamalakanta Das, alias Budhia, sustained severe injuries during a police encounter that took place on Tuesday morning near the Charampa Malgodown area. The incident was confirmed by Town Police Station Inspector Prabhanshu Mishra.

According to the police, Budhia is a hardened criminal with more than 14 cases registered against him, including serious charges related to robbery and firing incidents. Acting on a specific tip-off about his movement, a police team launched an operation near Charampa Malgodown to nab him.

Inspector Mishra said that when the police attempted to intercept Budhia, he opened fire at the cops in an attempt to escape. The police retaliated in self-defence, during which Budhia sustained serious injuries. His accomplice, who was with him at the time, managed to flee the spot on a motorcycle, and a manhunt has been launched to track him down.

During a search of the area, police recovered firearms and other incriminating materials from the encounter site. Budhia was first rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital for emergency treatment and later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced medical care.

Police said security has been tightened in the area and further investigation is underway.
