Severe cold wave grips Odisha as temperatures dip below 10°C in 11 cities
Bhubaneswar, Dec 9: Odisha continues to shiver under an intense winter spell, with minimum temperatures plunging below 10°C in at least 11 cities across the state. The coldest point was recorded in G. Udayagiri of Kandhamal district, where the mercury dipped to a biting 4.3°C, the lowest temperature registered so far this season.
Meteorologists report that the minimum temperature in north-interior Odisha is currently 5–6 degrees below normal, while south coastal Odisha is witnessing a drop of 3–4 degrees below average. The persistent chill is attributed to cold, dry northwesterly winds sweeping into the region, intensifying the winter conditions and triggering discomfort among residents.
In view of the harsh weather, the Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave warning for Sundargarh, Angul, and Jharsuguda districts. People in these areas have been advised to take necessary precautions, especially during nighttime and early morning hours, when temperatures drop further.
Despite the prevailing cold, experts offer a reassuring forecast. A shift in wind patterns is expected after December 13, which may lead to a gradual rise in night temperatures. This change is likely to ease the ongoing cold wave, bringing much-needed relief to people across Odisha. Until then, residents are urged to stay warm and remain prepared as the state continues to grapple with one of the season’s harshest cold spells.
