Over 3,200 rape cases reported in Odisha in 15 months, CM Majhi tells Assembly
Bhubaneswar, Dec 8: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday presented alarming statistics on crimes against women in Odisha, revealing that 3,205 rape cases were registered between July 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025. The information was shared in the Odisha State Assembly in response to a question raised by MLA Prasanna Acharya.
According to the data, the state also recorded 202 cases of attempted rape, highlighting the persistent vulnerability faced by women. Additionally, 9,851 cases of molestation and 1,476 incidents of sexual harassment were reported during the same period, underscoring a worrying rise in gender-based crimes.
The Chief Minister’s statement further revealed 2,310 cases of public disrobing, 152 incidents of voyeurism, and 556 cases of stalking, pointing to growing concerns over women’s safety both in public and private spaces. The data also mentioned 4 acid attack cases, 129 incidents of trafficking, and 796 cases of eve-teasing, reflecting the wide range of crimes affecting women across the state.
A significant number of cases related to domestic violence and dowry were also reported. These include 8,863 cases of kidnapping or abduction of women, 277 dowry-related homicides, 5,861 cases of dowry torture, 6,773 cases of non-dowry torture, and 49 dowry-related suicides, indicating the urgent need for stronger preventive measures and enforcement.
