Villagers lay siege to Vedanta Aluminium plant in Jharsuguda over pollution, job denial
Bhubaneswar, Dec 8: Residents of Bhurkamunda, Katikela, and nearby villages launched a strong protest outside the Vedanta Aluminium Plant in Jharsuguda, demanding immediate action on long-standing pollution issues and fulfillment of employment assurances. The villagers blocked the plant gates, halting movement and vowing not to withdraw until their demands are addressed.
Protesters alleged that continuous industrial operations have resulted in serious health problems, air pollution, and environmental degradation in their localities. Despite repeatedly raising the issue, they claimed that the company has failed to implement effective pollution-control measures, leaving the community exposed to hazardous conditions.
Many villagers also expressed anger over the broken promises of employment, stating that their land was acquired with the assurance of jobs, which they are yet to receive. They accused the company of hiring outsiders instead of prioritizing displaced families and alleged that even those employed locally are paid meagre wages.
The villagers are demanding proper compensation, job opportunities for locals, and strict pollution-control measures, asserting that the blockade will continue until concrete action is taken.
