Deep depression over Bay of Bengal likely to intensify into cyclone within 12 hours: IMD
Bhubaneswar, Nov 27: A weather disturbance brewing over the southwest Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a deep depression and is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system, which formed near the Sri Lanka coast, is currently positioned close to the island’s southeast shoreline and continues to show signs of rapid development.
As per the IMD’s morning bulletin, the deep depression was centered near latitude 6.3°N and longitude 82.4°E—approximately 150 km east-northeast of Hambantota and 190 km east-southeast of Batticaloa in Sri Lanka. The system is projected to move north-northwestwards over the next 48 hours, potentially affecting northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of southern Andhra Pradesh.
The developing weather system has already impacted Tamil Nadu, bringing widespread rainfall, with some isolated pockets receiving between 7 and 10 cm of rain. The IMD has issued alerts warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds in the areas likely to fall under the storm’s influence.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable zones to remain cautious, as the system is expected to intensify further while moving across the Bay of Bengal.
