Cold wave tightens grip on Odisha; mercury set to dip further in coming days
Bhubaneswar, Nov 17: A strong cold wave has begun sweeping across Odisha, and weather experts predict the chill will intensify over the next four days. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures are expected to fall below 12°C in more than 10 locations, signalling one of the coldest spells of the season. Even the state capital, Bhubaneswar, is bracing for a sharper drop in temperature, making the winter unusually chilly for residents.
The northern and interior regions of Odisha are experiencing the most severe impact of the cold wave. Kandhamal district continues to remain the coldest part of the state, with G. Udayagiri recording a biting 5.4°C, the lowest so far. Semiliguda followed closely at 7.4°C, while 13 cities across Odisha recorded night temperatures below 12°C, indicating a widespread cold spell.
Other significantly affected areas include Daringbadi (7°C), Phulbani (8°C), Rourkela (10.2°C), Jharsuguda (10.6°C), Angul (10.6°C), Keonjhar (10.8°C), Chipilima (11°C), Kirei (11.3°C), Bhawanipatna (11.4°C), Koraput (11.5°C), and Nabarangapur (11.6°C).
The twin cities—Cuttack and Bhubaneswar—are also reeling under the cold wave. Bhubaneswar recorded a minimum of 12.9°C, while Cuttack stood at 13.6°C—their coldest readings of the season. Bhubaneswar’s temperature has dropped by nearly 3°C in just two days, plunging 6.4°C below normal, while Cuttack’s minimum temperature is 5.1°C below normal.
