Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Takes Strides Towards a Beggar-Free Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar  – The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the city into a beggar-free urban landscape by inaugurating another essential facility. Yesterday, Hon’ble Mayor of BMC, Smt Sulochana Das, marked the official opening of a new Beggar Rehabilitation Centre in Andharua, further strengthening BMC's resolve to eradicate beggary from the city.

This state-of-the-art facility boasts a 100-bed capacity and is specifically designed to provide shelter and rehabilitation to women beggars, as well as those facing mental challenges or with physical disabilities.

BMC has already been proactive in addressing this issue, with four such rehabilitation centers now operational throughout Bhubaneswar.

Previously, BMC had secured 400 accommodations approved by the SSEPD department to provide shelter and support to beggars. The initiative is part of BMC's comprehensive plan to eliminate beggary from Bhubaneswar.

BMC is dedicated to spreading awareness about this initiative throughout the city via its enforcement team. Additionally, the Police Department is actively collaborating with BMC to make this vision a reality. Citizens are encouraged to report any instances of beggary within the city by contacting BMC through the 1929 city call center.

Hon’ble Mayor Smt Sulochana Das expressed her enthusiasm for this initiative, saying, BMC's commitment extends beyond just providing accommodations. Beggars identified will receive appropriate medical and psychological care. After a period of three to four months, BMC will work towards the reintegration of these individuals with their families, ensuring their holistic well-being.

BMC Commissioner Shri Vijay Amruta Kulange expressed"We believe in the potential for change, and we are committed to creating a compassionate and beggar-free Bhubaneswar. Through collaboration and community involvement, we aim to provide a brighter future for those in need.

Before this addition, Bhubaneswar had a total of four rehabilitation centers located in Rangabazar, Andharua (three centers), and Niladri Vihar. The inaugural ceremony witnessed the presence of esteemed guests, including Mayor Smt. Sulochana Das, Additional Commissioner I, Laxmi Kanta Sethi, and Zonal Deputy Commissioner of the Southwest, Ravi Narayana Jethi, alongside the dedicated BMC team.
