Odisha Govt launches statewide drive to make college campuses drug-free
Bhubaneswar, Oct 30: In a major initiative to curb rising drug abuse among youth, the Odisha government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to ensure that all colleges and universities across the state become completely drug-free zones.
Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj announced that an Anti-Drug Inspector will be appointed in every higher education institution to oversee awareness, prevention, and enforcement activities. A faculty member from each college and university will take on this additional role to monitor campus behaviour and coordinate related programmes.
The move follows the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines aimed at promoting a healthy and drug-free academic environment. The government’s approach focuses on prevention through interactive discussions, yoga sessions, physical fitness programmes, and the promotion of nutritious food habits throughout the week.
“After witnessing drug-related incidents in several institutions across the country, the UGC launched a nationwide campaign. Odisha is determined to implement it in full spirit,” said Minister Suraj.
The Higher Education Department will soon issue detailed instructions outlining the duties of Anti-Drug Inspectors and the operational framework for awareness and monitoring activities in all campuses.
