Fresh low-pressure likely over Bay of Bengal; IMD warns of active weather spell
Bhubaneswar, Oct 22: A new low-pressure system is expected to form over the southern Bay of Bengal around October 24–25, signaling another spell of unsettled weather in the region.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the existing well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is currently moving west-northwestward and is likely to intensify into a depression near the north Tamil Nadu–south Andhra coast within the next 24 hours. The system is expected to continue moving toward north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of these regions.
Meanwhile, the regional meteorological centre in Bhubaneswar has issued alerts for thundershowers, lightning, and gusty winds along the Odisha coast and in several southern districts till October 25.
Meteorologists have further indicated the possible formation of two more low-pressure systems — one around October 26–27 and another by October 29–30. While the first may have limited impact, experts caution that the second system could intensify further. Some international weather models have even hinted at potential cyclonic development, though the IMD has not confirmed any such possibility yet.
