Mukti Mandap Pandit Sabha declares October 20 as official date for Diwali and Paya Shraddha
Bhubaneswar, Oct 15: The long-standing confusion over the correct date for Diwali celebrations has finally been resolved. The Mukti Mandap Pandit Sabha of Puri has officially announced that Diwali and Paya Shraddha will be observed on October 20, putting an end to the debate that emerged after some calendars marked the festival on October 21.
In a press conference, the Sabha clarified that the Amavasya Tithi (new moon)—which is essential for Diwali rituals—will last only 14 minutes on October 21, rendering it inauspicious for celebrations as per Hindu traditions. Therefore, the Sabha concluded that the proper time to observe Diwali and Paya Shraddha begins on October 20 at 3:23 pm.
The learned priests of the Mukti Mandap Pandit Mahasabha emphasized the importance of adhering to scriptural precision to preserve religious sanctity. They also appealed to devotees and institutions to celebrate on the decided date. Furthermore, the Sabha has requested the Odisha government to declare October 20 a public holiday, aligning with traditional and astrological correctness. The government is expected to consider the Sabha’s recommendation soon.
