IMD clarifies: No cyclone threat over Bay of Bengal, light rainfall likely in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Sept 15: Amidst widespread rumours of an impending cyclone, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a clarification, putting speculations to rest. According to IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, there is no threat of a cyclone or depression developing over the Bay of Bengal in the coming days.
He informed that a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay around September 20, but it is unlikely to intensify into a cyclone. The existing low-pressure system, which had triggered rainfall in many parts of Odisha over the past few days, has now shifted towards Telangana and Vidarbha, leading to a gradual decline in rainfall activity across Odisha.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate showers in some coastal and interior districts on Monday and Tuesday, while ruling out the possibility of heavy rainfall in any region. Mohapatra further clarified that the southwest monsoon will not withdraw from Odisha at this stage.
Assuring the public, he urged people not to believe in rumours during the festive season and to rely only on official IMD updates for accurate weather information.
