Crime Branch files charge sheet in Fakir Mohan College student’s self-immolation case

Bhubaneswar, Sept 9: The Crime Branch has submitted a detailed charge sheet in the Balasore SDJM court in connection with the tragic self-immolation of a woman student at Fakir Mohan College. The charge sheet, running into 349 pages, incorporates the statements of as many as 120 witnesses, highlighting the gravity and sensitivity of the case.
Initially, the charge sheet has been filed against two of the accused, while proceedings against the other two will follow. Altogether, four persons, including two students, had been arrested for their alleged involvement in harassment, conspiracy, and abetment. Investigators said the two student accused had played a role in provoking the victim to take the extreme step.
The case remains under active investigation, and the Crime Branch has kept the file open for further evidence. The incident dates back to July 12, when the student set herself on fire after reportedly being denied justice in a sexual harassment case filed against the HoD of Integrated BEd. Despite receiving treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, she succumbed to 95 per cent burn injuries on July 14, sparking statewide outrage.
