IMD issues heavy rainfall and thunderstorm alert for Odisha from September 9–13

Bhubaneswar, Sept 9: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning for Odisha, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in several districts between September 9 and 13. The alert has raised concerns over possible flooding, waterlogging, structural damage, and disruptions to normal life.
According to the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, active monsoon conditions are driving the weather system. A monsoon trough currently extends from Southeast Pakistan to the northeast Bay of Bengal, while an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over South Odisha and north Coastal Andhra Pradesh, extending up to 4.5 km above mean sea level. A trough in westerlies is also influencing the rainfall activity.
The IMD has issued colour-coded warnings for the next five days. On September 9–10, a yellow warning is in place for thunderstorms and lightning across most districts. On September 10–11, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Rayagada may experience heavy showers. An orange warning has been issued for September 11–12 in Malkangiri and Koraput, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall. Widespread thunderstorm activity is also likely on September 12–13 across coastal and interior districts.
