Excessive social media use linked to domestic violence, warns Odisha Deputy CM Pravati Parida

Bhubaneswar, Sept 9: Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida has expressed concern over the rising misuse of social media platforms, warning that excessive engagement with reels and mobile phones is contributing to domestic violence. She urged women to take breaks from social media and mobile phones to safeguard family harmony and mental well-being.
Parida made these remarks while addressing a state-level training camp on the Domestic Violence Act, 2005, and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. She announced that the government would soon strengthen Women and Child Desks at police stations across Odisha and fill up vacant posts to ensure quicker responses to cases of domestic abuse.
“Just as women observe fasting by limiting food intake, they should also consider reducing their mobile phone usage. Excessive use of reels and social media often leads to misunderstandings at home, which can escalate into violence,” Parida stated.
Supporting her concern, social activist Sophia Seikh from Bhadrak noted that rising social media addiction is straining relationships, making it crucial to address this growing social challenge.
