Capital Hospital plans to implement newborn tagging amid baby swapping allegations

Bhubaneswar, Oct 6: In response to recent allegations of baby swapping at Bhubaneswar's Capital Hospital, hospital authorities have implemented a new protocol to prevent any further misunderstandings. Newborn babies will now be tagged immediately after birth.
"After a newborn is delivered, the attendant will verify the baby's gender with the medical staff and inform the family. Subsequently, the mother will be notified about the baby's gender. Immediately after birth, the baby's footprint will be recorded, and the hospital staff will meticulously document all baby-related details to prevent any misinformation," announced Laxmidhar Sahoo, the Director of Capital Hospital, on Friday.
Furthermore, Director Sahoo emphasized that severe action will be taken against individuals making unfounded allegations of baby swapping against the hospital.
The controversy arose when Pranakrushna Biswal alleged a child-swapping incident following his wife's delivery at Capital Hospital on September 26. The parents initially believed they had a baby boy but later received a girl child. Biswal filed a complaint with the Hospital Director and the Capital police station, demanding a DNA test to resolve the matter.
As a result, a DNA sample was collected on Monday, and the test results were disclosed on Thursday. Additionally, a female attendant from the hospital was suspended for allegedly providing incorrect information to the family during the baby handover process.
