IMD issues orange warning as low-pressure system persists over Bay of Bengal

Bhubaneswar, Sept 3: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange warning for several districts in Odisha as a well-marked low-pressure area lingers over the northwest Bay of Bengal, close to the north Odisha coast. As of Wednesday morning, the system’s cyclonic circulation extended up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and showed a southwestward tilt with height. The system is likely to move west-northwestwards and bring widespread impact over north Odisha, adjoining Jharkhand, and north Chhattisgarh in the next 24 hours.
According to the IMD’s mid-day bulletin, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Puri, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, and Cuttack, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty surface winds reaching 30-40 kmph.
A yellow warning has been issued for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Boudh, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Koraput, Sundargarh, Balasore, and Kendrapara, where heavy rainfall may disrupt normal life.
Districts including Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, and Rayagada have also been placed under a yellow warning, with thunderstorms and gusty winds forecast
The IMD has warned that thunderstorms with winds up to 40 kmph may continue until September 8. Residents have been advised to stay cautious, as heavy rainfall could trigger flooding, traffic disruption, and other hazards.
