Low-pressure system over bay of bengal triggers red alert in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Sept 2: The low-pressure area forming over the Northwest Bay of Bengal (BoB) intensified on Tuesday morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue multiple weather alerts for Odisha. The system is expected to become more marked within the next 24 hours and move west-northwestwards across the state in the coming two days.
The IMD has sounded a red alert for Deogarh, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty surface winds reaching 30–40 km/h. Officials cautioned that the situation could cause waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupt normal life.
An orange warning has been issued for Puri, Khordha, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Angul, Cuttack, Koraput, and Nabarangpur, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places. Meanwhile, districts such as Bolangir, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh, and Malkangiri remain under a yellow alert.
Additionally, thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are predicted in parts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Rayagada.
The IMD has advised residents and local administrations to stay alert and take precautionary measures. The warnings will remain effective until September 7.
