Protests erupt in Umerkote after ASHA worker’s death allegedly due to medical negligence

Bhubaneswar, Sept 1: Tension gripped Umerkote in Nabarangpur district on Monday after the death of a 28-year-old ASHA worker triggered protests by members of the District ASHA Workers’ Union, labor groups, and villagers. The deceased has been identified as Daimati Bhatra, a resident of Semala panchayat.
According to reports, Daimati was admitted to the Umerkote Sub-Divisional Hospital on Sunday afternoon after experiencing severe labor pain. She reportedly received treatment there for nearly three hours before being referred to the District Headquarters Hospital in Nabarangpur. Tragically, she died on the way before reaching the facility.
Her family members and colleagues alleged that delayed referral and negligence by attending doctors caused her death. They placed her body at DNK Medical Square in Umerkote and staged a road blockade, demanding immediate action against the medical staff responsible and adequate compensation for the bereaved family.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with union leaders calling for stronger accountability in rural healthcare. To prevent escalation, a heavy police presence has been deployed at the protest site. Authorities have assured that the matter will be investigated.
