Dismantling of Lord Jagannath’s chariots begins at Puri Singha Dwara

Bhubaneswar, Aug 22: The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) on Friday began the dismantling of the three grand chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra at the Singha Dwara in Puri. The process marks the concluding phase of the annual Rath Yatra rituals.
The dismantling started with Devi Subhadra’s chariot, Darpadalana, and will be followed by Lord Balabhadra’s Taladhwaja and finally Lord Jagannath’s Nandighosa. Unlike construction, which begins from the wheels and moves upwards, dismantling is carried out in the reverse order. Servitors first remove the kalash, olta sua, khapuri parabadhi, potala, and other wooden components in a step-by-step process.
Before the dismantling, the horses, charioteers, and parshwa deva-devis (side deities) were respectfully removed from the chariots. The entire procedure is being conducted under strict security arrangements to avoid any mishap, as thousands of devotees continue to visit the temple.
A specially prepared storage facility has been created to safely preserve the dismantled wooden parts. According to estimates, it will take around 15 to 20 days for the Bhoi servitors to complete dismantling all three chariots. The SJTA has assured that all rituals and safety protocols are being meticulously followed.
