Boundary wall of Malkangiri Airport collapses after heavy rainfall

Bhubaneswar, Aug 18: A section of the boundary wall at Malkangiri airport collapsed following hours of heavy rainfall on Sunday, raising serious concerns over the safety and quality of construction at the site. The incident has once again highlighted the airport’s vulnerability to rain-induced damage, with locals expressing strong dissatisfaction over repeated structural failures.
This is not the first time the boundary wall has given way. Earlier, a similar collapse had resulted in two deaths, sparking public outrage and questions about the accountability of contractors and officials involved in the project. Despite multiple repair works in the past, the wall continues to remain weak due to alleged poor construction quality and faulty design.
Residents pointed out that the absence of a proper drainage system around the airport premises contributed to the collapse. On Sunday, four hours of relentless rainfall led to waterlogging, while runoff from a nearby hill exerted additional pressure on the already fragile wall. The impact of the collapse also damaged the adjacent asphalt road, further inconveniencing commuters.
Locals have demanded urgent intervention from authorities, insisting on a permanent and scientific solution to prevent further mishaps.
