Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati allegedly attacked during torchlight rally
Bhubaneswar, Aug 16: A political rally in Koraput town turned tense on Friday evening after senior Congress leader and Jeypore MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati was allegedly attacked by a local man during a torchlight march.
The rally, organized by the Koraput District Congress, commenced near Gundicha Temple and proceeded towards the town bus stand. The incident occurred when Bahinipati, accompanied by Congress Legislature Party leader Ramachandra Kadam and several party workers, was addressing supporters.
According to eyewitnesses, Krushna Chandra Kuldeep, a daily wage worker at the bus stand, suddenly rushed towards the MLA, slapped him, and allegedly hurled abuses. Shocked party workers and locals immediately intervened, overpowered Kuldeep, and handed him over to the police.
Both sides have since lodged formal complaints. While Bahinipati’s personal security officer (PSO) accused Kuldeep of assaulting the legislator, Kuldeep countered with serious allegations, claiming that Bahinipati and his brother had conspired to kill him.
Kuldeep, who sustained minor injuries during the scuffle, is undergoing treatment at Koraput District Headquarters Hospital. Police have registered the case and confirmed that Kuldeep will be produced in court after medical examination. An investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances behind the incident.
