108 ambulance driver found drunk and asleep while transporting pregnant woman in Gajapati

Bhubaneswar, Aug 8: In a deeply disturbing incident, a 108 ambulance driver in Odisha’s Gajapati district was found asleep on duty while transporting a pregnant woman in critical condition. The shocking episode occurred in the R. Udaygiri block, where the driver allegedly consumed alcohol before taking charge of the emergency vehicle.
According to reports, the pregnant woman, identified as Nandini Raita from Kanikipadar village, was being transported to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after being referred from Chandragiri Hospital due to worsening labour pains. However, the situation turned chaotic when the driver stopped the ambulance midway and fell asleep, ignoring the patient’s critical condition.
Family members accompanying Nandini tried to wake him up, but their repeated efforts failed as the driver was heavily intoxicated. Stranded and panicked, they were forced to arrange an alternative vehicle to continue the journey to the hospital.
The incident has sparked outrage in the area, raising serious questions about the reliability of emergency services. Locals have demanded strict action against the driver and better monitoring of 108 ambulance personnel to ensure such negligence is not repeated, especially in life-threatening situations.
