Youth arrested in Pattamundai student suicide case, blackmail angle under probe

Bhubaneswar, Aug 8: In a crucial breakthrough, Kendrapara police have arrested Pramod Behera, the boyfriend of a 20-year-old Pattamundai College student who allegedly died by suicide after setting herself on fire three days ago. Behera was tracked down and taken into custody from Chennai. He is currently being brought back to Odisha for further questioning.
According to police sources, the victim’s family had earlier filed a complaint accusing Behera of blackmail. He had allegedly threatened to leak the girl's private photos and videos, pushing her into severe mental trauma. Disturbingly, despite the family’s formal complaint lodged six months ago, no concrete action was taken. An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) reportedly dismissed the issue and advised the girl to block Behera’s number.
The victim, a resident of Kathiapada village, had reportedly been under constant psychological pressure due to the harassment. A forensic team, along with Kendrapara SP, is scheduled to visit her home today to examine the scene and collect evidence.
Meanwhile, police are conducting a forensic analysis of the victim’s mobile phone, which may hold key evidence — including any threatening messages — that could shed light on the circumstances surrounding her death.
