Two arrested for allegedly abetting FM College student Soumyashree Bisi’s self-immolation

Bhubaneswar, Aug 4: In a significant development in the Fakir Mohan College self-immolation case, the Odisha Crime Branch has arrested two youths—Jyoti Prakash Biswal and Shubhra Sambit—in connection with the tragic death of 20-year-old student Soumyashree Bisi.
Jyoti Prakash, who initially appeared to have tried to save Soumyashree, and Shubhra Sambit, the state youth secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), were arrested on charges of abetting the suicide. According to investigators, both allegedly provoked Soumyashree to take the extreme step. Shockingly, they reportedly recorded the incident on their mobile phones and even helped her carry out the act.
Following their arrest, the duo was produced before the SDJM Court and subsequently remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.
Soumyashree, a second-year Integrated B.Ed student of FM College, set herself on fire on July 11 in protest against alleged sexual and mental harassment by her department head, Samir Kumar Sahu. Despite being treated at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, she succumbed to her injuries on July 14 after suffering 95% burns.
Reports indicate that although the college formed a committee to probe her complaint, no justice was delivered, pushing her to take the tragic step.
