Eminent bureaucrat and cultural visionary Subas Pani passes away at 76

Bhubaneswar, Aug 4: Distinguished IAS officer and cultural luminary Subas Pani passed away today at his residence in Bhubaneswar. He was 76. Known for his stellar contributions to both public administration and the arts, Pani leaves behind a lasting legacy. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. His last rites will be performed at the Satyanagar Crematorium at noon.
Pani served as the Chief Secretary of the Government of Odisha and held various key positions, including Deputy Election Commissioner at the Election Commission of India. A multi-domain expert, he contributed immensely in the areas of Systems, IT, Infrastructure, Trade Promotion, and Elections. He played a key role in establishing the Bhubaneswar Software Technology Park, which was instrumental in positioning Odisha as a growing IT hub.
He oversaw the successful conduct of several major elections, including three Lok Sabha polls in 1996, 1998, and 1999.
Deeply involved in cultural pursuits, Pani authored numerous literary works, composed music for the Sampoora Geetagovinda CDs (Saregama, 2008), and curated renowned festivals like Kumar Utsav, Mukteswar Dance Festival, and Ashtapadi Festival. He was a regular Doordarshan commentator for Puri’s Ratha Yatra and held a CSI Fellowship and INTACH life membership.
