Kanwariya swept away in Chitroptala River while fetching water for Shravan ritual

Bhubaneswar, Aug 4: Tragedy struck on the final Monday of the holy Shravan month as a Kanwariya, identified as 25-year-old Abrutt Kumar Kar, went missing after being swept away in the Chitroptala River in Odisha’s Cuttack district. Abrutt, a resident of Kasipur village under Salipur police limits, was reportedly collecting water for the ritual of Jalabhishek—a traditional offering of water to Lord Shiva—when the mishap occurred.
The incident took place near Bateswar village, a popular site for Kanwariyas to draw water from the river. According to eyewitnesses, Abrutt accidentally slipped and fell into the strong current of the river and was quickly swept away.
Locals immediately alerted authorities, and a team from the Salipur fire brigade rushed to the spot to launch a rescue and search operation. Despite continuous efforts, his body had not been located till the last reports came in.
The incident has cast a shadow over the religious festivities, with villagers and fellow devotees anxiously awaiting updates. Search operations by the fire brigade and local volunteers are ongoing as authorities intensify efforts to recover the missing youth.
