Salaries withheld for Mahanga Block employees over unauthorised absence during rain alert

Bhubaneswar, Aug 1: The salaries of employees at Mahanga Block in Cuttack district have been withheld for the month of July following their unauthorised absence from duty during an emergency weather alert. Despite prior instructions from the District Collector directing all block-level staff to remain present in their offices in view of heavy rainfall warnings, several employees failed to report to work.
Sources said the District Magistrate had cancelled all leaves and issued a clear directive for mandatory attendance, as the administration was preparing for any possible emergency arising from continuous rain. However, the employees chose to remain absent, citing the fourth Saturday as a reason for not attending office. Their absence was noted, and a formal complaint was filed with the District Magistrate.
Taking serious note of the dereliction of duty during a critical time, the District Magistrate ordered disciplinary action and withheld their July salaries as a punitive measure. The action sends a strong message to government staff about accountability, especially during emergency situations when public service is critical. Further inquiry into the matter is likely, officials added.
