4-year-old girl given anti-rabies vaccine without dog bite history, parents allege medical negligence at Bonai Hospital

Bhubaneswar, July 31: In a disturbing case of alleged medical negligence, a four-year-old girl from Koida was reportedly administered an anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) at Bonai Sub-Divisional Hospital (SDH) despite having no history of a dog bite. The child was taken to the hospital on July 29 with minor allergy symptoms but was mistakenly treated with an ARV injection, her parents claim.
According to the girl’s mother, Chinmayee Jena, they consulted a paediatrician at Bonai SDH, who surprisingly prescribed ARV. When she visited the pharmacy to collect the vaccine, staff asked if the child had been bitten by a dog — to which she replied no. Despite this, the injection was given.
Following the vaccination, the girl reportedly developed severe allergic reactions and a high fever. Upon returning to the hospital, the doctor allegedly admitted to the mistake, tearing up the original prescription and issuing a new one. Shockingly, he insisted the ARV was part of routine immunisation and advised completing two more doses.
The incident has sparked outrage, with the family demanding accountability.
