Darshan disrupted at Puri Jagannath Temple due to ‘Maha Mahasnan’ ritual after servitor injury

Bhubaneswar, July 29: Devotees at the Puri Jagannath Temple faced a temporary halt in general darshan today following the performance of the sacred ‘Maha Mahasnan’ ritual. The purification ceremony was conducted urgently after an unfortunate incident involving Suar Badu Sevak Madhusudan Sunathaali, who accidentally fell within the temple premises and sustained injuries that caused bleeding from his legs.
As per temple tradition, the presence of blood within the sanctum is considered a serious ritual impurity, necessitating immediate sanctification. Following the incident, temple servitors initiated the ‘Maha Mahasnan’—a grand holy bath ritual to purify the temple and restore spiritual sanctity.
Sudhasuara sevaks informed that all previously prepared food offerings, known as Amunia Bhog, were immediately buried in Koili Baikuntha or Nilachala Upavana as they were deemed unfit for offering due to contamination. Fresh bhog was subsequently prepared and offered to the deities only after the completion of purification rites.
During the entire process, the temple remained closed to devotees for darshan. Normal rituals and public access resumed only after the sanctification ceremony was fully completed, upholding the temple’s centuries-old spiritual protocols.
