NHRC seeks report on Ganjam gang-rape case, cites human rights concerns

Bhubaneswar, June 23: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a shocking gang-rape case in Odisha’s Ganjam district and issued notices to the state government and police, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The incident, which reportedly took place on June 15 at Gopalpur sea beach, involved the gang-rape of a 20-year-old college student by ten individuals, some of whom are suspected to be minors.
In a statement released on Monday, the NHRC stated that if the media reports are accurate, the case represents a grave violation of human rights. The Commission has sought responses from Odisha Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja and Director General of Police Y.B. Khurania. The report must include the status of the investigation, the victim’s medical condition, and any support measures—such as compensation or counselling—being provided.
According to media accounts, the victim had visited the beach with a male friend during the Raja festival celebrations. The accused reportedly overpowered her friend, restrained him, and then took turns raping her. The perpetrators also allegedly extorted money and threatened the duo before fleeing.
