Flood crisis in Balasore: Government employee leaves cancelled as Subarnarekha River overflows

Bhubaneswar, June 21: In view of the worsening flood-like situation triggered by the swelling Subarnarekha River, the Balasore district administration has cancelled all government employee leaves with immediate effect. District Collector Suryawanshi Mayur Vikas issued an official order, directing all employees currently on leave to return to duty without delay.
The order further prohibits employees from leaving their headquarters without prior approval to ensure effective emergency coordination. Heads of government departments have been instructed to strictly comply with the directive, with any violations to be dealt with under provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
The situation has turned critical as the Subarnarekha River has breached its banks near Rajghat in Jaleswar block following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas. Several low-lying villages across Bhogarai and Baliapal blocks, including Khalabadia, Kulha, Baunskhana, Kudamansingh, Chaudhurykud, and Baliapal, are now submerged.
Floodwaters have reached up to four feet above road level in some areas, cutting off connectivity and isolating multiple panchayats. Vast stretches of paddy and vegetable fields are under water, causing heavy losses to farmers and endangering their livelihoods. Relief and rescue efforts are underway.
