Suspended IAS officer Dhiman Chakma moves High Court for bail in corruption case

Bhubaneswar, June 20: Suspended IAS officer and former Dharmagarh Sub-Collector Dhiman Chakma has approached the Orissa High Court seeking bail after his earlier plea was rejected by the Vigilance Court. Chakma, who is currently in judicial custody, was arrested by the Odisha Vigilance Department on June 9 in connection with a high-profile corruption case.
According to official sources, Chakma was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹10 lakh. Following his arrest, a search operation at his official residence led to the recovery of an additional ₹47 lakh in cash, intensifying the gravity of the allegations.
Chakma was initially produced before the Special Vigilance Court in Bhawanipatna, which remanded him to judicial custody and denied his bail plea, citing the seriousness of the charges and ongoing investigation.
Now, the Orissa High Court will hear his fresh bail application, which is expected to test the legal merits of his detention and the nature of the evidence gathered. The case has attracted widespread attention, highlighting concerns over corruption in the civil services.
