Fake CMO official extorts Rs 2 lakh from engineer, demands more; police launch probe

Bhubaneswar, June 6: In a disturbing case of impersonation and extortion, a man posing as an employee of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) allegedly extorted Rs 2 lakh from a senior government engineer in Bhubaneswar. The accused reportedly threatened the officer with a transfer to a remote district if he failed to pay.
As per the complaint lodged by Pratap Kumar Haripal, Superintending Engineer of the Roads and Buildings Division in Angul, the accused—identified as Janakiballav Mohapatra—contacted him about a month ago, pretending to be a CMO official. Mohapatra allegedly warned Haripal of a forced transfer to Malkangiri unless he paid Rs 2 lakh. Fearing administrative action, Haripal visited Mohapatra’s residence in Bhimatangi and handed over the amount.
However, the harassment didn’t stop there. Mohapatra reportedly demanded an additional Rs 5 lakh and began threatening Haripal when he refused to pay. He also allegedly used abusive language and issued death threats.
Left with no option, Haripal approached the Airfield Police Station and filed a formal complaint. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to trace and arrest the impersonator.
