Medha Patkar detained in Rayagada, barred from attending anti-mining meet

Bhubaneswar, June 5: Renowned environmental and social activist Medha Patkar was reportedly detained by police on Thursday in Rayagada district before she could attend a public meeting organized to mark World Environment Day. The meeting, scheduled at Hatpada under Kashipur block, was aimed at voicing opposition to proposed bauxite mining activities at the Sijimali mines.
The event was intended to serve as a platform for local communities and environmental groups to raise their concerns about the ecological and social impact of mining in the region. Patkar, known for her leadership in the Narmada Bachao Andolan and other grassroots movements, was expected to address the gathering and support the anti-mining resistance.
However, upon arriving at the railway station, Patkar was stopped by police and prevented from proceeding to the venue. Speaking to a local news outlet via phone, she said, “Police showed me an order from the Collector that listed around 20 to 25 names, including mine, who were barred from entering Rayagada district. They accused me of coming here to instigate people.”
Patkar refused to be taken to the VIP lounge and protested the restriction, calling the situation undemocratic and suppressive.
