Elephant electrocuted to death in Angul; farmer detained for illegal electric fencing
Bhubaneswar, May 31: In a tragic incident, a young tusker was found dead near Talsira in the Bantala forest range under the Angul forest division on Saturday. Forest officials estimate the age of the deceased elephant to be between 8 and 10 years. The preliminary investigation suggests that the cause of death was electrocution.
According to reports, the elephant is believed to have come in contact with a live electric wire that had been illegally set up by a local farmer to guard his mango orchard from wild animals. The wire, which was connected to a power source without proper authorization, proved fatal for the tusker as it roamed into the orchard.
The forest department has taken serious note of the incident and has detained the farmer for questioning. Legal action will be initiated against him depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Officials from the forest department have announced that a post-mortem examination will be conducted soon to confirm the exact cause of death. The incident has raised concerns about increasing human-wildlife conflict and the use of dangerous methods to protect farmlands.
