Depression over Bay of Bengal Brings heavy rainfall to Odisha; IMD issues red alert

Bhubaneswar, May 30: A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has weakened into a depression and is currently centered over Bangladesh. Despite its weakening, the system is expected to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to the northeastern parts of Odisha today, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In response to the weather threat, the regional meteorological office has issued a red alert for several districts, warning of very heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm in some areas. Residents have been advised to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and take all necessary precautions to ensure safety.
The districts likely to be severely affected include Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nabarangapur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore. The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h in parts of Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and other districts.
Scattered rainfall is expected across Odisha from May 29 to June 1, with intense showers forecast on May 30. From June 5-11, eastern India, including Odisha, may experience below-normal rainfall but above-normal temperatures. From June 1-3, temperatures are expected to rise by 1–3°C following the current spell of heavy rain.
