IMD issues alert as deep depression forms over Bay of Bengal

Bhubaneswar, May 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an alert following the formation of a deep depression over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, close to the West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts. The weather system, which has intensified from a low-pressure area, is currently moving northwards at a speed of 20 kmph.
As per the latest update at 8:30 AM IST, the deep depression is centred at latitude 21.3° N and longitude 88.5° E—approximately 60 km southeast of Sagar Island and 110 km east-southeast of Digha. The IMD has warned that the system is likely to make landfall between Sagar Island (West Bengal) and Khepupara (Bangladesh) by afternoon.
In anticipation of the landfall, the IMD has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across parts of northeastern India. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong gusty winds are expected to hit the affected regions. Authorities have been advised to remain alert, particularly in low-lying and coastal areas prone to flooding.
Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea, and disaster response teams are being kept on standby to address any emergency arising from the storm's impact.
